David D. Hoy , 100, a resident of Pinecrest Manor and formerly of 1149 Johnsonburg Road, St. Marys, died on Sunday, January 23, 2022 at Pinecrest Manor following a brief illness.
He was born on October 6, 1921 in Johnsonburg, a son of the late Harold and Esther Straub Hoy.
On November 14, 1942, in College Station, TX, he married the love of his life, Helen Hinchliffe. She preceded him in death on April 26, 2016. Together they enjoyed more than 73 years of marriage.
Dave was a graduate of Johnsonburg High School, class of 1939, where he participated in football and track and field. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1942 during WWII and received training in Radar at Texas A & M University in College Station, TX. He was then stationed at Lakehurst Naval Air Force Base in New Jersey during the war, flying in blimps to detect and destroy German U-Boats off the Atlantic Coast.
After the war, Dave founded Hoy’s Radio Service in 1945 on Erie Avenue in St. Marys, which he owned and operated until his retirement in 1997. Following his retirement, Dave donated the Hoy Building to the St. Marys Youth Center.
He was very active in the community and had served as President of the St. Marys Businessmen’s Association. He was a former member of the Elks, K of C, and the Columbian Club. He was also a member of St. Marys Sportsmen’s Club, the Civil Air Patrol, and was a former board member of the Warren State Hospital. He was also a member of the St. Marys Church.
In his younger years, he enjoyed flying his airplane and taking many pleasure trips from the St. Marys Airport. He also enjoyed trap and skeet shooting, hunting, and fishing, especially with his grandchildren.
He is survived by a daughter, Betsy Healy and her husband John of St. Marys, a son Jeffrey Hoy and his wife Tracy of New Wilmington, and by four grandchildren, Sean (Bridget) Healy of Pittsburgh, Diana (Brian) Caiazza of New Wilmington, David Hoy of Grove City and Katherine (Steve) Marquardt of Hopewell Junction, NY. She is also survived by five great-grandchildren; Meghan Healy, Tully and Brian Caiazza and Julian and Sylvan Marquardt, as well as by numerous nieces and nephews; including two special nieces, Joyce (Bob) Arnold and Kathy (Jim) Herzing.
In addition to his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers; Donal Hoy, and Harold Hoy, and by one sister; June Geiger.
A Mass of Christian Burial for David D. Hoy will be celebrated on Thursday, January 27, 2022 at 11:00 AM at the St. Marys Church, Church Street, St. Marys, PA 15857 with Rev. Peter Augustine Pierjok, OSB, as celebrant.
Military Honors will be accorded by the St. Marys Servicemen’s Burial Detail.
Burial will follow in Holy Rosary Cemetery.
Visitation will be at the Lynch-Green Funeral Home on Thursday, January 27, 2022 from 9:30 until 10:30 AM.
Memorial Contributions may be made to the St. Marys American Legion, St. Marys Historical Society, Holy Rosary Church in Johnsonburg, or to St. Marys Church.
