Gary R. Cheatle

Gary Richard Cheatle , 75, of King Veteran’s Home in Waupaca, Wisconsin, passed away during
the early morning hours on Wednesday, June 29, 2022 at ThedaCare Medical Center after a fall that required
hip surgery.

Gary was born on January 21, 1947 to Vernon and Anna Young Cheatle. Gary joined the Army when
he was 17 years old to serve his country during the Vietnam War. He served with honor and
was awarded a Purple Heart, National Defense Service Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge 1st
Award and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Ribbon.

Almost 10 years ago, Gary moved to Wisconsin to be closer to his daughter. These last years
gave Gary a peace not known in his turbulent younger years, although he still could stir up
occasional mischief to keep things interesting. He enjoyed weekend getaways, Brewers
baseball games, family vacations, and playing chess. He took special pride in teaching his
youngest grandson Alex how to play chess as well as shoot a great game of pool. As his
memory began to fade, he moved to the Veteran’s Home and enjoyed camaraderie with other
veterans. He remained a die-hard 49ers fan in the midst of Packer country. He enjoyed sharing
stories…he always could spin a good tale and was known for his generous spirit, willing to give
the shirt off his back for those he truly cared about.

He is survived by his daughter, Sabina Cheatle of Madison, WI and three grandsons, Brandon,
Devin, and Alex. He is also survived by brothers Tom Cheatle of Wheatland, CA, Tim Cheatle of
Deltona, FL, Dan Cheatle of St. Marys, PA, and Alan Cheatle of Whidbey Island, WA and sister
Judy Windle-North of Richland Hills, TX.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Vernon Cheatle, Jr.,
William Cheatle, Robert Cheatle, and David Cheatle and by one sister, Mariann Dick.

A Graveside service will be held at 1:00 PM on Thursday, July 7, 2022 at the St. Marys Catholic Cemetery.
Military Honors will be accorded by the St. Marys Servicemen’s Burial.

There will be no public visitation.
