George J. "Jim" Gnan , 80, of 138 Hemlock Road, St. Marys, died on Monday, February 26, 2018 at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh following a brief illness.
He was born on December 21, 1937, in St. Marys, a son of the late George Gnan and Alice Ott Gnan Gardner.
On July 20, 1957 in Queen of the World Church, he married Mary Jane Himes Gnan, who survives.
Jim was a lifelong resident of the area and a member of St. Marys Church. He retired from Stackpole after more than 33 years of service, and then went on to work for 7 years at Keystone, 7 years at Thermometrics, 7 years at Walmart, and then then 3 years at ProProcess. He was a member of the Crystal Fire Department for more than 23 years, and had managed the Fireaters Little League Baseball team for more than 25 years. He enjoyed bowling and golfing, but most of all he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife of nearly 61 years, Mary Jane Himes Gnan, he is survived by four daughters, Jean Ray, Julie (Brad Harshbarger) Gnan, Jennifer (Dan) Dornisch, and Janet (Mike) Dunlap, all of St. Marys, by four sons, James (Sue) Gnan of St. Marys, Jeffrey (Linda) Gnan of Coudersport, Joseph Gnan and Jason Gnan, both of St. Marys. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren, Angela, Kevin, Mandi, Andrew, Evan, Kailey, Dylan, Jesse, Nicole. Missy, Amanda and Kristiana, by 10 great-grandchildren, Kara, Hailey, Abigail, Tristen, Braeden, Braedon, Corbyn, Alayah, Nicholas, and Wyatt, and by one sister, Carol (Robert) Sweitzer of Daguscahonda, a step-brother, Melvin Gardner, a step-sister, Alice Gardner, as well as by numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his step-father, Pete Gardner, and by a son in law, Timothy Ray on March 14, 2017.
A Mass of Christian Burial for George J. Gnan will be celebrated on Friday, March 2, 2018, at 10:00 AM at St. Marys Church, Church Street, St. Marys, PA 15857 with Fr. Peter Augustine Pierjok, officiating.
Interment will follow in St. Marys Catholic Cemetery
Visitation will be held at the Lynch-Green Funeral Home on Thursday, March 1, 2018 from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM.
Memorial Contributions may be made to the Crystal Fire Department or to the Alzheimer's Association.
