SERVICES:  Wednesday at 10 AM at Sacred Heart Church

Gerald J. "Smitty" Smith , 91, of 103 Bayberry Road, St. Marys, died on Sunday, September 25, 2011 at Elk Haven Nursing Home following a short illness.
He was born February 27, 1920 in Ridgway, a son of the late Louis and Amelia Fileshifter Smith.
On December 26, 1951 in St. Marys, he married Audrey Resch Smith, who survives.

Smith was a lifelong resident of the area and had worked for many years at the Elk County Dairy. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII and received a Purple Heart after being wounded. He was a member of the American Legion and enjoyed spending time with his family.

In addition to his wife of nearly 60 years, he is survived by a daughter, Susan, Mrs. Donald Mahovlich of St. Marys; two granddaughters, Nicole, Mrs. Jim Merat, and Jenna Mahovlich; two great-grandchildren, Damian and Ethan; a brother, Louis "Earl" Smith and his wife Mary of Middleton, Md., and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, James Smith.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Gerald J. "Smitty" Smith will be celebrated at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 325 Center Street, St. Marys, on Wednesday, September 28, 2011 at 10 a.m., with the Rev. Eric Vogt, OSB, as celebrant.
A military service will be conducted by the St. Marys Servicemen's Detail.
Burial will be in the St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery.

There will be no visitation.
