Joseph M. Vollmer

January 30, 1942 — April 8, 2025

St. Marys

Joseph Michael Vollmer, 83, of St. Marys, passed away at Penn Highlands DuBois on April 8, 2025.

He was born on January 30, 1942 in St. Marys, PA, a Son of the late Thomas Vollmer and Kathryn Buerk Vollmer.

On May 21 1966, at St. Marys Church, he married Anita Vollmer, who survives. Together they shared more than 58 years of life.

Joseph was a graduate of Central Catholic High School Class of 1960. He enlisted in the US Navy until 1966 where he worked on the flight deck of the USS Lexington where he was an aviation boatswains mate directing jets to land on the flightdeck. He started his local working career in the yard crew at Stackpole Carbon. He eventually worked his way into Environmental Services for Burkett and Associates until retirement. In 2015, he took on the most important role of his life, as the main caregiver to his beautiful wife. Joe also served in the US Army and retired from the PA National Guard after 23 years of service.

In his younger years, Joe spent hours touring on his motorcycle, watching motorcycle races, spending time with his many cousins and friends on Bucktail Trail, hunting, fishing with his brothers and sharing a campfire and a few beers and lots of laughs with friends.

Joe enjoyed talking about his world experiences during his service time abroad with the US Navy. Joe had a built in GPS and often was able to drive to a destination after glancing at a map the night before. He had a knack for being able to give exact driving directions from memory.

Ever the history buff, Joe traveled across the United States visiting Civil War battlefields. Joe, Anita and their beloved Westies Reilly and Lucah enjoyed camping with their friends. The last few years, Joe was heavily invested in the Oak Island treasure - we are hoping he now knows the secrets to Oak Island!

In addition to his wife Anita, Joe he is survived by two children; Crystal (Steve) Gornati of Kersey, and Jody Vollmer of St. Marys, and his beloved dog Lucah, as well as his brothers-in-law, Dennis Green (Barbara) of Tucson, AZ, Alan Green (Linda) and Clifford Green (Patty) of St. Marys, and Barry Green of Kersey, as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In addition to his parents, Joe was preceded in death by three brothers; Edward, Michael, and Thomas Vollmer in infancy; two sisters; Caroline Vollmer, and Clara Vollmer in infancy and a brother-in-law, Arnold "Bud" Green and sisters-in-law, Mary Lee (Green) Vollmer and Delores Vollmer, a niece, Jean Vollmer and a nephew, Tommy "Grover" Vollmer.
